L-Theanine:

l theanine anxiety drepssion sleep L-theanine (also known as just theanine) is an amino acid found in tea, more specifically – green tea. Even though green tea has stimulatory effects, due to caffeine… the amino acid L-Theanine causes a contradictory CALMING effect.

Attempts to isolate the L-theanine amino acid from the tea leaves, along with its physical and neurological benefits, use to be very difficult, expensive, and inefficient. But, thanks to newer technology, we now CAN isolate this amino acid (even though, it’s still very expensive when used at the CORRECT dosage).

Physiological Effects of L-Theanine
For Anxiety & Depression?

Research on human volunteers has demonstrated that L-theanine may create a sense of relaxation in approximately 30-40 minutes after ingestion (at 1000 mgs) via at least two different mechanisms. First, this amino acid directly stimulates the production of alpha brain waves, creating a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness similar to what is achieved through meditation. Second, L-theanine is involved in the formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA).

GABA influences the levels of two other neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin, producing the key relaxation effect.

Other Benefits …

L-theanine has an effect on the release or reduction of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, resulting in improved memory and learning ability. L-theanine may also influence emotions due to its effects on the increased release of dopamine. L-theanine reduces brain serotonin concentration by either curtailing serotonin synthesis or increasing degradation in the brain.

Any Negative Side-Effects?…

Although there are little known side effects to L-theanine, this might be due to the fact that few clinical studies have been conducted. In fact, that may be the biggest draw back to this new amino acid – that it’s TOO NEW to tell. Only recently has it been used by itself, as a dietary supplement. It’s usually only used as part of green tea, at a very LOW dose (only 1-2% of green tea contains L-Theanine).

The other negativity with L-theanine in treating Anxiety & Depression, is that the daily effective dose of 600 mgs to 1000 mgs can be very expensive.

So, What’s YOUR Best Solution?…

I’ll be honest with you. No single ingredient works at 100% effectiveness forever, let alone for every person. And that includes L-Theanine or any other single amino acid, herb or nutrient.

Think about it. Just like you don’t eat only broccoli for best health, you don’t want to use only one herb or nutrient either.

Because L-Theanine is so new, it doesn’t have very many clinical studies and can be very expensive, I would suggest you HOLD OFF from using it and utilize other proven ingredients (that are both safer and less costly). If you want to have a few cups of green tea daily, that’s fine. Just watch the caffeine intake.

SUMMARY: The anecdotal evidence for L-Theanine is positive. But the jury is still out on its safety for long-terms use and I can’t in good conscience recommend using L-Theanine (especially for Anxiety & Depression) when there are other ingredients with dozens of double-blind studies and decades (or sometimes centuries) of safe usage to back-up their track record.

In fact, when it comes to Anxiety & Depression, here are other key ingredients you should look for, which ARE clinically proven AND safe, such as:

  • Phenibut
  • Kava Kava
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Passion Flower Extract
  • Valerian Root Extract
  • Inositol
  • 5-HTP

When combined with the above ingredients, it creates a “synergy” where you get MORE positive effects, at a much LOWER dose. That’s the secret!…
